ALGERINE-Class
Fleet Minesweeper fitted with
Turbine
propulsion machinery ordered on 30th
April 1942 from Harland and Wolff,
Belfast. Laid down on 20th April
1943 at the same time as sister
ships RECRUIT and PLUCKY she was
launched on 25th November 1943. The
sixth RN
ship to carry this name, introduced
in 1804
for a Gun Brig built at Blackwall
and purchased from the
builder. It was last used for a
destroyer built in 1910 at Cowes by
JS White and sold in 1921. Her build
was completed on
11th February 1944. This minesweeper
was not adopted by any civil
community
in UK following a successful WARSHIP
WEEK campaign for National Savings
as her
build had not been started.

HMS SQUIRREL damaged by detonation

mine and had to be sunk after rescue
of survivors

Seven of ship’s company
were killed.

Came under air attack by suicide
aircraft after completion of LIVERY.
HMS VESTAL was
seriously damaged and also had to be
sunk.

clearance of entry into Singapore by
Eastern Fleet ships
prior to formal
surrender of Japanese forces in
Malaya.

N o t e s
HMS
RIFLEMAN remained in the Far East
with the
Flotilla for minesweeping operations
to ensure safe passage of shipping
into
ports in the area. She returned to
UK with the remaining sister ships
of the
Flotilla in July 1946. Paid off at
Sheerness in September she was
reduced to Reserve status and
laid-up. This ship was
recommissioned for
service in the 2nd Minesweeping
Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet after
refit in
1947. at Portsmouth. Based in Malta
during subsequent service deployed
in the Mediterranean and on took
part Fleet and Flotilla exercises as
well as Mediterranean Fleet
exercises and visits annual
programmes. At the end
of 1954 she returned to UK with
sister ships PLUCKY, CHAMELEON and
RECRUIT to Pay-Off. After arrival at
Portsmouth on 13th December she
reduced to Reserve status and was
laid-up. During 1958-59 this ship
was refitted including
installation of a SQUID
anti-submarine mortar to improve her
capabilities as an
escort. In 1970 the ship was
transferred to Barrow where she was
used to provide accommodation for
Reserve
Fleet personnel and those
standing-by warships and submarines
under construction by
Vickers-Armstrong.
Placed on the Disposal List in 1972
she
was sold to BISCO for demolition by
WH Arnott Young at Dalmuir where she
arrived in tow in October
that year.
