WHITAKER, Watkin L (right), Lieutenant Commander, Sultan, 3 October 1942, died

Courtesy Bill Corser, grandson of Lt Cdr Whitaker - "..... You show(ed) his rank as Lieutenant, as does his CWGC gravestone, but he is wearing Lt Cdr braid in the (larger) photo. He was at the Seletar Naval Base on Singapore Island (HMS Sultan) up to the Japanese invasion, but managed to escape via Sumatra to Australia, and ended up in Brisbane, where he died of peritonitis following an operation for a perforated ulcer (not as a POW as originally recorded). It may be that the Lt Cdr rank was a temporary local promotion. The photo was taken in Brisbane and sent to my grandmother, who had managed to get back to the UK with her daughters, having been evacuated from Singapore ahead of the invasion." He continues - "I understand that my grandfather was the Supply Officer for the boom defence at Seletar - I think this means the anti-submarine nets and associated defences. My mother, Watkin's elder daughter, met my father, then a Corporal in the RAF, in Singapore. My father moved with his squadron of Buffalo fighters to Sumatra before the Japanese invaded, and was evacuated from there to India before getting back to England. He and my mother were married a month after Watkin's death, by which time my mother had joined the WRNS."
