Courtesy Neil Wilkes at wilkes.neil@lycos.co.uk, Motor Mechanic Parker was his wife's uncle - from page 118 of "Massacre at Tobruk by" Peter C Smith (ISBN 0 7183 0664 3), "MTB 308 (Lieutenant Roy Yates) was taken under attack by the fighters around 0730 and had received several cannon hits which disabled one of her engines and slowed her down. In this crippled state, she was lacking the usual agility of her companions and thus attracted more than her share of attention from the patrolling aircraft, which now began to include German Stukas from StG3 and then, later on that day, the long-range twin-engined Junkers Ju88 from LG1, on their way back to their usual bases in Crete from whence they had been diverted. She was joined by her sister, MTB 310, and the two vessels were attacked by a pair of the latter aircraft at 0800 which failed to score any hits. No sooner had they gone than another pair appeared and repeated the process, then two more, and so it continued. Their assailants were not the First Team but finally one of the Ju88's approached in a very shallow dive angle. It was apparently hit and damaged by return fire from MTB 308 and failed to pull up, crashing full-tilt into the craft whereupon both MTB and bomber exploded in the carnage of mutual destruction. There were no survivors from either."

Courtesy Lewis Wood, Banstead History Research Group, on behalf of Jane Hill. Edward was her mother’s cousin - "He lived in Kenneth Road, Woodmansterne with his mother and father (Albert and Dorothy). He had been in the Navy since he was a boy (photograph right while in training at HMS Ganges) almost travelled the world. At the time of his death he was based on a shore base in Genoa. He was drowned caused through diving into the sea and hitting his head on submerged debris. It was only a few days before his 21st birthday. I have two detailed diaries kept by him and given to me by his sister Grace who lives in Australia. My mother (his cousin) also lived in Woodmansterne and is the same age as Edward, and has fond memories of him."
