Introductory Notes

by Don Kindell

Most of the Naval Parties (NP) cover the latter years of World War 2, the higher numbers referring to the Indian Ocean. Post-war NP's, including the 1982 Falklands War, and some as late as 1991, are also listed here.

The content has not been altered in any way, but notes have been added to clarify certain entries and most abbreviations removed to simplify understanding.

The lists, covering the period 1941 to 1991, are believed to be quite complete, but do have gaps. In some cases this was because the numbers were not used. In other cases, no information exists or the Naval Party might not have been formed.

General Notes

by Ben Warlow

Author of such definitive books as "Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy" and editor/reviser of the latest edition of "Ships of the Royal Navy" by the late J J Colledge

1. Data taken from various sources, mainly Red List – first appearance 15.10.44-end of Red List 1950, then in Pink Lists. Information between stars (*---*) is from Naval Historical Branch (NHB) cards, “…” indicated the card then aligns with other data already entered.

2. *Parties with the word “Major” were those sent to India in 1944*

3. The word “Jig” etc refers to the old phonetic alphabet…Able, Baker.. etc

4. Dates could be suspect and some transcription errors looking at movements and dates. Also suspect, there were “tidying up” times when many parties disappeared – probably having gone months before – ie early 46.

5. Relevant Shore Establishment data in sq. brackets.

6. MONRADs – Mobile Naval Radar Stations – type 277 radar –associated with “Y” units (MONWHYs) – one at Courseilles for surface watching, one for warning against low flying aircraft, one landing on a US beach and later to Cap de la Hague.
