Notes:

1. Latitude/longitude, including for days in port, show representative decimal positions for each day, as calculated by the Old Weather project's analysis program. As such, they differ by varying amounts from the positions recorded, usually at noon, in the log pages. In addition, some latitudes/longitudes have been amended in edited logs for errors in the logs, for errors in identifying locations by the analysis program, or simply for greater accuracy. In all cases, refer to the log-page scans for the positions as originally recorded. Not all log pages contain this information and the ships' positions have therefore often been estimated.

2. Full account of any day is available by clicking on the link above that day. Groups of links refer to log book covers and introductory information; some may be blank.

Editor’s notes:

The second line of each day’s entry is the position of the ship at noon. When Enterprise is in a known port or anchorage, those co-ordinates are used. Although the navigating officer must have determined the noon position when not in port it hasn’t usually been entered into the log, so on those days I have estimated the ship’s position using Journey Plotter and these are marked (approx). All other positions in the text are given in degrees and minutes.

Each day’s entry is a précis of the original log page, with routine entries usually omitted. Occasionally, often when in harbour on the 1st of the month, the entire routine has been included to give a flavour of life aboard. On days when there are no details at all, you may assume that the crew are cleaning and painting.

LOGS FOR FEBRUARY 1917

(Surveying in the area around Sanak Island)

Although Enterprise is a survey vessel and must know her position at noon very exactly, they have not recorded it in the log for the next three months, so on days when they are on their survey ground and there are no clues as to where that is, I have used the co-ordinates for the anchorage where they are based. A normal day’s surveying covers between twenty and forty miles, so they won’t be wildly wrong.
