Notes:

1. Latitude/longitude, including for days in port, show representative decimal positions for each day, as calculated by the Old Weather project's analysis program. As such, they differ by varying amounts from the positions recorded, usually at noon, in the log pages. In addition, some latitudes/longitudes have been amended in edited logs for errors in the logs, for errors in identifying locations by the analysis program, or simply for greater accuracy. In all cases, refer to the log-page scans for the positions as originally recorded. Not all log pages contain this information and the ships' positions have therefore often been estimated.

2. Full account of any day is available by clicking on the link above that day. Groups of links refer to log book covers and introductory information; some may be blank.

Editor’s notes:

Thanks and acknowledgements.

Ships, places and people have, where possible, a hyperlink when first encountered. All the links in the text come from sites that are maintained free of charge by enthusiasts. https://www.wikipedia.org is of course invaluable, particularly strong on US navy vessels.
http://www.clydesite.co.uk, http://www.red-duster.co.uk and http://www.tynetugs.co.uk have provided most of the histories of the merchant shipping encountered and http://www.wrecksite.eu is extremely informative, as well as reminding us of the eternal dangers of the sea. http://www.historicalrfa.org is the premier site for information on the unsung heroes of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary service and http://www.photoship.co.uk does what it says on the packet, fascinating and an invitation to hours of browsing, so be warned.
http://www.trinityhouse.co.uk, http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse, http://wlol.arlhs.com and http://www.lighthousedigest.com have provided details on the ever fascinating subject of lighthouses, past and present. Finally I couldn’t have managed without http://www.geographic.org, maps and co-ordinates for everywhere we went.

Unstinted thanks and praise are due to those who provide and maintain the sites mentioned above, often at their own expense. All of us who follow the histories of ships that no longer leave a wake on the ocean and sailors who have downed their last tot are greatly in their debt.

Note: The second line for each day’s entry is the ship’s position at noon in modern decimal format. This is usually taken from the log, but can also be the co-ordinates of a port or taken from the log of a vessel with which Moth is in company. Where none of these are available I have estimated the position from other details in the log and these are marked (approx).

Each day’s entry is a précis of the log, but occasionally when in harbour I have included all the information, to give a flavour of the routine. Readers eager to know when the libertymen were landed or at what time the dinghy was hoisted can of course refer to the original page by clicking on the url above the date.

5 February 1920

Plymouth and at sea towards Vigo.

Lat 50.2, Long -4.35 (from log of Magnolia)

The flotilla to go out to the China station is now assembled. The light cruiser Colombo will lead, with the sloops Bluebell, Foxglove, Hollyhock and Magnolia and the gunboats Cicala, Cockchafer, Cricket, Mantis and Moth. RFA Ebonol is the oiler in attendance for the first part of the journey. The gunboats, essentially river craft, are shallow drafted and flat bottomed, with low freeboard and small bunkers, so the plan is that they will be towed most of the way by the larger vessels.

Part of Moth’s crew will be accommodated on HMS Colombo and will rejoin when in port to work.

THE VOYAGES OF HMS MOTH
Operations on China's rivers

JP map Moth China

Moth now leaves HK for operations in the Pearl River delta. Her log does not record noon positions when up river, so many of those that follow are best guesses, marked (approx). Almost all of the names have changed since then of course, making it difficult to follow her passages and the actual geography of the delta is also likely to have changed since then. Apologies for errors.
