Seaplane Carrier, built on merchantman hull

Pendant Nos. N.94 (4.17), N.72 (1.18). Launched 1917 Denny, purchased while building, commissioned 25.8.17. 3070 tons/3547grt, 352(oa), 315(pp)x45x14ft. Turbine 6700shp, 19kts. Armament: 2-3in, 2-12pdr AA, 7 aircraft. Grand Fleet 1917-18. Sold 1921. (British Warships 1914-1919)

Nairana had been ordered for Huddart Parker in January 1914 but had been suspended after being launched to clear the slipway in 1915. Requisitioned 27 February 1917 for completion as a carrier by the builders. She was similar to the 1915 conversions but incorporated many wartime improvements. Landplanes were accommodated forward, seaplanes aft. Three main workshops were installed, and a 95ft flying-off platform. She carried the following aircraft: Beardmore SB 3Ds Nos N6105, N6108, N6110 (1917)1. Fairey Campanias (5, in White Sea), Sopwith Camels (2, in White Sea). Commissioned 25 August 1917 and served with Grand Fleet in 1918, then White Sea, Archangel in 1919. Sold 1920 to Tasmanian Steamship Co. (Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1906-21)

Notes:

1. Latitude/longitude, including for days in port, show representative decimal positions for each day, as calculated by the Old Weather project's analysis program. As such, they differ by varying amounts from the positions recorded, usually at noon, in the log pages. In addition, some latitudes/longitudes have been amended in edited logs for errors in the logs, for errors in identifying locations by the analysis program, or simply for greater accuracy. In all cases, refer to the log-page scans for the positions as originally recorded. Not all log pages contain this information and the ships' positions have therefore often been estimated.

2. Full account of any day is available by clicking on the link above that day. Groups of links refer to log book covers and introductory information; some may be blank.

HMS Nairana was anchored from 6.51am until 1.45pm in 12 fathoms of water, implying she was near the coast at that time.
