01.15: About to check soundings aft when discovered motor launch broke away turned on searchlight and picked up motor launch dritfting before the wind. Immediately called all hands 0127 Lowered Lifeboat 0135 Lowered motor surfboat No 4667 it being necessary to lower the lifeboat first as it was swung out in the davits. 0138 Motor surfboad No 4667 away in charge of Ensign R.F. Shunk to pick up drifting motor launch No 1777 0200 Motor surf boat No 4667 appeared to be in difficulty prepared to lower new motor launch No 5035 0205 While raising the new motor launch from the cradle to clear the strong back prepartory to swinging out; the after stopper held momentarily but suddenly slipped before the fall could be made fast on the cleat allowing the stern end of the launch to be dropped a distance of two feet on the nut under the skag holding the lower rudder pin striking the dek with great force; Smith Lydon (217-369) Sea 1/c was manning the after stopper 0210 Motor Launch No 1777 returned having left the motor surfboat No 4667 on the rocks. The motor in the surf boat having stopped the boat apparently having struck a hidden rock flooded the engine compartment: the boats crew then floated the motor launch No 1777 but were unable to free the motor surf boat accordingly returned to the ship for more assistance 0225 The new motor launch in charge of Lieutenant N.S. Fulford accompanied by motor launch No 1777 with dory in tow in charge of Lieut ~ C.O. Ashley departed in order to attempt recovery of motor surf boat. 0310 motor surf boat refloated and all boats returned arriving at 0330 and were taken aboard. 0800 The Commanding officer convened a special board of survey for the puropse of inquiring and reporting on the damage sustained by boats No 5035, 1777 and 4667 of which Lieutenant N.S. Fulford is senior member
