(Commemorated by Discoverer Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, and Discoverer Island, a small island in the bay)
Characteristics: Steamship, built by Todd Shipyards, New York 1918 as Bird-class minesweeper USS Auk, cost $500,000, 180ft long x 35ft beam x12ft draft. Along with Guide and Pioneer 1, known as "Bird-boats" in C&GS service.
Log Period and Areas of Service: 1922-1941, Alaskan waters.
Summary of Service
1922 - Transferred to C&GS.
Fate: 1941 - Returned to Navy, converted to salvage ship, ARS-3, retained name.
