HMS SANDPIPER - River Gunboat

HMS Woodcock, a generally similar but older river gunboat (CyberHeritage, click to enlarge) return to Contents List

River Gunboat ordered from John I Thornycroft and launched on 6th June 1933. She was the 2nd RN ship to carry this name, first used for the same type of warship in 1897 and sold in 1920. The ship was dismantled after build had been completed and the sections sent to Shanghai where they were re-assembled. She entered service in 1934 and joined the Yangtse Flotilla.

YING HAO became part of the navy of the Peoples Republic of China after 1948 and was service in 1970. The expansion of the Chinese navy since then suggests she may have been withdrawn from use to provide crews for modern ships.
