SHOREHAM-Class
Sloop ordered under the 1929 Programme
from HM Dockyard,
Chatham on 4th December 1929 and laid
down on 24th November 1930. The ship
was launched by the Mayor of
Rochester, Mrs G. Jenner on 16th July
1931 as the 6th RN
ship to carry the name that was
introduced in 1693 for a 4th Rate and
last used for a
trawler hired for minesweeping during
WW1. She was commissioned on 24th
March 1932 for service on
the South Africa Station and accepted
into service a week later on the
completion of
build. This ship remained in South
Africa based at Simonstown until 1939
and after being
re-armed there late in 1938 returned
to UK. She re-commissioned at Sheerness
in June 1939 for service en the East
Indies Station and arrived at Aden in
September 1939. Following a successful
WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign
in March 1942 she was adopted by the
civil community of Crompton,
Lancashire.

ROCHESTER continued
duty as Navigation School Training
Ship until September 1949 when she was
placed on the
Disposal List. The ship was sold to
Clayton and Davie for breaking up at Dunston
on Tyne on 16th January
1951.She arrived there under tow for
demolition on 10th February after a
most
distinguished
record of
service in peace and war.
