No J3353 (Yard No 1248) on 28th December 1943.
The ship
was launched
en
6th July 1944 as the 1st RN ship
to
bear the name, that of the Gaelic named
Loch Caolisport in
Argyllshire. Taken in tow to
Liverpool, fitting-out was carried out at
Liverpool in the Builder’s yard and
completed on 9th July 1944.

on French tanker FERNAND GILABERT
and Liberian tanker MEILKA which had collided in
Gulf of Oman in heavy weather.
After fires on board FERNAND GILABERT had been
extinguished the tanker was taken
towed stem first to Karachi.
(Note: This major operation Involved HM Aircraft
Carrier BULWARK, HM Frigates
PUMA. ST BRIDES BAY and LOCH ALVIE whose
Commanding Officer was in
charge of
the co-ordination of the fire-fighting, repair
and salvage activities.
The crews of both tankers abandoned their ships
after the collision.
Salvage payments totalling £376,000 were paid to
the 3,700 personnel in 1960.)

to BISCO for
demolition by Hughes Bolcow.
She arrived in tow at the breaker’s yard in Blyth

Crown for the Ensign Staff made by Japanese
Prisoners
of War at Johore,
Malaya in 1946 was of particularly
unique design. Every piece was individually made
for ease of dismantling. It is
reputed to be the only Crown for a British
warship to have been made by an
enemy.
