Type
II HUNT-Class Escort
Destroyer ordered from Swan Hunter at Wallsend
on
Tyne under 1939 War Emergency Programme on 3rd
September 1939. The ship was
laid down as Job No J4142 on 10th April 1940
and launched on 14th December 1940
as the 1st RN warship to carry the name. Build
was completed on 16th August
1941 and she was adopted by the civil
community of Tavistock,
Devonshire following a successful WARSHIP WEEK
National Savings campaign in
March 1942.

and ORP KRAKOWIAK to cover a raid by 12 Cdo on
Lofoten Islands.

P o s t W a r N o t e
On
completion of refit HMS
LAMERTON returned to UK in December 1945 to
pay off and reduce to Reserve status at
Harwich.. In 1953
she was transferred on loan to the Indian Navy
and renamed INS GOMATI. Five years later the
ship was purchased
outright and she continued to be used as a
training ship for another 17 years.
This destroyer was taken out of
service and sold for breaking-up in 1975.
