TRIBAL-Class
Destroyer
ordered from Cockatoo Docks and
Engineering Co at Sydney, Australia for service
with the Royal Australian
Navy on 24th January 1939. The ship was laid
down on 15th November 1939 and launched
on 3rd November 1940. Her build was completed on
30th April 1942. Build design
followed that of the TRIBAL Class Fleet
Destroyers ordered from UK shipyards in
1936. She was the first RAN ship to bear the
name

N o t e s
HMAS
ARUNTA
re-commissioned on
completion of refit and was deployed for Fleet
duties for screening and associated duties.. She
took part in joint exercises with RNZN
and was
nominated for conversion to an Anti-submarine
destroyer
in 1950. She rejoined the Fleet in June 1950
with modified armament including a squid
Anti-submarine mortar
outfit. This destroyer was deployed
operationally until 1957 when Paid-off and
reduced to Reserve status.
Placed on the Disposal List in 1968 the ship was
sold the China Steel
Corporation for demolition at Taipai.
During passage
in tow to Taiwan by Japanese tug TOKO
MARU to Taiwan she
developed a serious list and sank 60 miles
from Broken Bay on 13th February 1969.
