LEANDER-Class
cruiser ordered under the 1930
programme from HM Dockyard Devonport
on 2nd March
1931 and laid down on 24th September that
year. She was launched on 31st March
1932 as the 14th RN ship to carry the name,
introduced in 1683 for a 2nd Rate
and last used for a 1909 battleship which
was sold in 1922. Build was completed
on 22nd February 1934. In 1939 she was
deployed in the South Atlantic.

ran into enemy minefield.
Hit
one mine and disabled.
Whilst
adrift hit second mine which wrecked
propellers and rudder.
Subsequently
detonated a third mine which caused
further damage aft.
Nearly
three hours later a 4th mine was struck
amidships and the ship then sank very
quickly.
Only
one seaman survived and taken prisoner.
He
was the only survivor out of a
complement of 764. (Casualty
