TANZEY, Daniel, Ordinary Seaman, P/JX 358923, Weyburn (RCN), 22 February 1943, ship loss, MPK (with thanks to Daniel Tanzey, Lancs, 14 Oct 2010 - "Danny was my Father's elder brother and the eldest of three brothers and two sisters. He was killed on HMCS Weyburn in February 1943, aged 19. He had lied about his age to join up - much to his mum's distress and, having completed his training, he was waiting to be assigned to a ship in Liverpool. Weyburn arrived at Liverpool as part of a convoy escort and needed replacement crew, before returning to sea duty. Danny was "next in line", but behind him were two Canadian seamen. He told my father that they offered him all sorts of inducements to let one of them get a berth in one of "their" ships, but Danny was desperate to get to sea. After Weyburn was sunk the second-in-command, Lt Milsom, wrote to my grandmother.  My Father kept the letter and passed it on to me. He also kept newspaper cuttings of the incident, including Danny's award of Mentioned in Dispatches (MiD). I have these, along with his medals and MiD, which I have had mounted and framed. The letter is now very old and delicate, having been written on lightweight, war-period paper.")
