FAA, 846 Sqn, Tracker, flying Grumman Avenger TBF, air crash

BALLENTYNE, Alan E, Ty/Sub Lieutenant (A), RNVR, DOW

HMS Tracker was part of the escort for a Russian Convoy, believed JW.54, the aircraft was flying on anti-submarine air patrol, and the aircrew consisted of  Sub-Lt Ballentyne, pilot, Sub-Lt Cab Calloway, observer, and Telegraphist/Air Gunner (TAG) Geoffrey Hearn. Crashed on the carrier that morning, and all the crew were badly burned with Lt Ballentyne dying in the sickbay and being buried at sea. The other two crew survived. The  Avenger TBF was built by Ford in the US, while the TBM was built by General Motors, and was originally called by the RN the Tarpon, named after a very vicious fish!  More detail can be found in books by Ray Sturtivant - Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm and Fleet Air  Arm aircraft 39 to 45. (With thanks to Mike Hearn, 29/3/10, son of the late Geoffrey Hearn)
