SS SCILLIN (1,579 grt) sailed from Tripoli at 13.00 hrs on Friday 13th November 1942 with 814 POWs and 200 Italian troops. Her destination was Trapani and she was taking the coastal route at a speed of 8 kts. On the 14th she was sighted by HM submarine P.212 (named SAHIB in 1943) at 19.29 hrs which was in the position  35:14 - 11:18.  After gaining a position up-moon to attack, P.212 fired 12 rounds with her 3in gun at a range of 14,000 yds. Ten registered and the ship was brought to a stop. P.212 closed to 700 yds and fired one torpedo into the engine room. The ship sank in less than 2 minutes. Of the 814 POWs,  24 Military, one South African and two Naval survivors were picked up and taken to Malta. Only 36 Italians survived. (with thanks to Brian Sims)
