Admiralty, 16th August, 1915.

The following awards have been made in recognition of services during the operations in the vicinity of the Dardanelles prior to 25th-26th April:

The KING (is) pleased to approve of the grant of the Victoria Cross to Lieutenant-Commander (now Commander) Eric Gascoigne Robinson, R.N., for the conspicuous act of bravery specified below.

Lieutenant-Commander Robinson on the 26th February advanced alone, under heavy fire, into an enemy's gun position, which might well have been occupied, and destroying a four-inch gun, returned to his party for another charge with which the second gun was destroyed. Lieutenant-Commander Robinson would not allow members of his demolition party to accompany him, as their white uniforms rendered them very conspicuous. Lieutenant-Commander Robinson took part in four attacks on the minefields - always under heavy fire.

________

The KING (is) pleased to give orders for the following appointments to the Distinguished Service Order and for the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to the undermentioned Officers in recognition of their services as mentioned:

To be Companions of the Distinguished Service Order.

Commander William Mellor, R.N. Commander Mellor was in charge of the trawler mine-sweepers, and took part in all the mine-sweeping operations under fire prior to and including the 18th March; he displayed conspicuous gallantry, always being to the fore in a picket boat, in the most exposed positions, encouraging his sweepers and setting a fine example.

Lieutenant-Commander (now Commander) John Rickards Middleton, R.N. Lieutenant-Commander Middleton on three occasions entered the minefields under heavy fire, where he organized and successfully carried out attacks - by means of explosive creeps (sic) - on the cables and jack stays.

Lieutenant Francis Hugh Sandford, R.N. Lieutenant Sandford was specially recommended for his good work in connection with the attacks on the minefields, which he entered on several occasions, including night of 13th-14th March. He invariably displayed great determination when under fire. Lieutenant Sandford also rendered good service in the demolition of Fort Seddul Bahr.

Acting Lieutenant Bernard Thomas Cox, R.N.R. Lieutenant Cox behaved in a most gallant manner when a volunteer in trawler No. 318 during the attack on the minefield on 13th-14th March. Though severely wounded he refused to quit his bridge until out of action. His vessel suffered serious damage and severe casualties.

Captain Christopher Powell Metcalfe, R.N. On the 18th March, after H.M.S. "Irresistible" struck a mine, Captain Metcalfe took H.M.S. "Wear" alongside her, and rescued nearly the whole of her crew under a very heavy fire, which caused several casualties - a very fine display of seamanship.

Lieutenant-Commander (now Commander) the Hon. Patrick George Edward Cavendish Acheson, M.V.O., R.N.

Acting Sub-Lieutenant (now Sub-Lieutenant) Alfred Edward Boscawen Giles, R.N.

Lieutenant-Commander Acheson, with Acting Sub-Lieutenant Alfred E. B. Giles, Chief E. R. A. 2nd Class Robert Snowdon, O.N. 270654, and Stoker 1st Class Thomas Davidson, O. N. K. 14753, went down into the fore magazine and shell room of H.M.S. "Inflexible" when the parties working in these places had been driven out by fumes, caused by the explosion of a mine under the ship; they closed valves and water-tight doors, lights being out, the shell room having two feet of water in it, rising quickly, and the magazine flooding slowly. The fumes were beginning to take effect on Acting Sub-Lieutenant Giles, but neither he nor the others left until ordered to do so by Lieutenant-Commander Acheson, who was the last to leave the shell room.

Engineer-Commander Harry Lashmore, C.B., R.N.

Engineer-Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Ellis Lester, R.N.

Engineer Lieutenant Rey. (sic) Griffith Parry, R.N.

Surgeon Martyn Henry Langford, R.N.

During the time H.M.S. "Inflexible" was steaming to Tenedos - after having struck a mine - the engine-room being in semi-darkness and great heat, the ship in possible danger of sinking on passage, a high standard of discipline was called for in the Engineer Department, a call which was more than met. Engineer-Commander Harry Lashmore, responsible for the discipline of the engine-room department, was in the starboard engine-room throughout the passage, and set a fine example to his men.

Engineer-Lieutenant-Commander Lester was in the port engine-room carrying out the same duties as Engineer-Commander Lashmore did in the starboard engine-room.

Engineer-Lieutenant Parry went twice through the thick fumes to the refrigerator flat to see if the doors and valves were closed; he also closed the escape hatch from the submerged flat, fumes and vapour coming up the trunk at the time.

Surgeon Langford .brought up the wounded from the fore distributing station in the dark. Fumes permeated the place, rendering five men unconscious. Surgeon Langford, though partially overcome by the fumes, continued his work.

Lieutenant Claud Herbert Godwin, R.N. Lieutenant Godwin commanded H.M.S. "Majestic's" picket boat, and was responsible for the successful shot by which the submarine E. 15 was destroyed after running aground.

To receive the Distinguished Service Cross.

Sub-Lieutenant (now Acting Lieutenant) Stephen Augustus Bayford, R.N.R., H.M.S. "Majestic."

Midshipman James Charles Woolmer Price. H.M.S. "Ocean."

These officers were both in command of picket boats on night of 13th-14th March. When "Ocean's" boat lay helpless, having been struck in the boiler-room by a shell, "Majestic's" took her in tow, under heavy fire, the conduct of these two young officers being altogether admirable, as was their handling of their boats.

Gunner (T) John William Alexander Chubb, R.N. Mr. Chubb, when a volunteer in trawler No. 488, on the night of 13th-14th March, brought his vessel out of action in a sinking condition, his commanding officer and three of the small crew being killed.

Gunner (T) William Walter Thorrowgood, R.N. Mr. Thorrowgood was in command of an armed whaler which, on night of 4th-5th March, twice went into the shore between Kum Kale and Yeni Shehr, bringing off two officers and five men, two of them wounded, exposed to rifle fire on both occasions.

Midshipman Hugh Dixon, R.N. Midshipman Dixon was in command of "Queen Elizabeth's" picket boat, and was responsible for saving several officers and men from " Irresistible " while under heavy fire, on the 18th March.

Acting Sub-Lieutenant (now Sub-Lieutenant) George Tothill Philip, R.N. Acting. Sub-Lieutenant Philip, H.M.S. "Inflexible," was in charge of his picket boat on the 18th March to deal with floating mines. The picket-boat was struck by a heavy shell. Acting Sub-Lieutenant Philip got her alongside "Inflexible," ordered his crew inboard, and, though his knee was injured, got into the engine-room, shut off steam and closed scuttle to stokehold before leaving his boat.

Lieutenant Arthur Cyril Brooke-Webb, R.N.R.

Midshipman John Blaxland Woolley, R.N.

These officers took part in the picket-boat attack on the 18th April.

Lieutenant Colin George MacArthur, R.N. Lieutenant MacArthur (commanding submarine B 6) carried out two most enterprising reconnaissances of E lo (?), both under fire. During the latter reconnaissance his skilful handling saved his ship.

War Office, 6th September, 1915.

(included in Army lists)

His Majesty The KING (is) pleased to approve the appointment of the undermentioned Officers to be Companions of the Distinguished Service Order, in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field:

Captain Alfred Leonard Forster, Royal Marine Artillery. For conspicuous gallantry on 16th June, 1915, near Zillebeke. During an attack, when two Companies of an Infantry Regiment were crossing some open ground, heavy shrapnel fire was opened on them, 3 being killed and 10 wounded. Captain Forster, with Corporal Stone, of the Royal Marine Artillery, who volunteered, went out under heavy shrapnel fire, and brought the wounded into shelter. Captain Forster has on many occasions showed the highest qualities of an Officer when fearlessness and good judgment were essential to success.

________

His Majesty The KING (is) pleased to confer the Military Cross on the undermentioned Officer(s), in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field:

Temporary Lieutenant Franks Lubbock Robinson, Royal Marine Artillery. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as Artillery Observing Officer between 30th July and 10th August, 1915, when posted on a high building in the neighbourhood of Ypres. The building was continually shelled by the enemy with heavy guns, but he maintained his position, a most precarious and dangerous one, even when the building was in imminent danger of falling, and supplied valuable information throughout.

GALLANTRY AWARDS

Admiralty, S.W., 13th September, 1915.

The KING (is) pleased to give orders for the appointment of the following Officers to the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of the services mentioned:

Commander Cecil Ponsonby Talbot, R.N. For his services in sinking a German torpedo-boat destroyer off the enemy's coast on the 26th July, 1915, whilst on patrol duty in his submarine.

Lieutenant-Commander (now Commander) John Beauchamp Waterlow, R.N. For his services in the minesweeping operations in the Dardanelles between the 19th February and 17th March, 1915. Lieutenant-Commander Waterlow took part in these operations on several occasions under a heavy fire, notably on the night of 13th-14th March, when he carried the attack through an area illuminated by six powerful searchlights and covered by the fire of four forts as well as numerous light guns.

Lieutenant-Commander Edgar Christopher Cookson, R.N. For services during the operations in the Shatt-el-Arab. Lieutenant-Commander Cookson was conducting a reconnaissance up a creek of the Euphrates west of Qurnah in the armed launch "Shushan" on the 9th May, 1915, when he was heavily attacked by Arabs concealed in the reeds. Although severely wounded early in the action he resumed command after his wound had been temporarily dressed, and succeeded in most ably extricating the vessel from a perilous position under heavy rifle fire.

Lieutenant-Commander Godfrey Herbert, R.N.

Lieutenant-Commander Claude Congreve Dobson, R.N.,

Lieutenant-Commander Archibald Douglas Cochrane, R.N. For services in a submarine in the Sea of Marmora, where he did great damage to enemy shipping, and after blocking the railway line near Kava Burnu by bombarding it from the sea, shelled a troop train and blew up three ammunition cars attached to it.

Captain (temporary Major) Ernest Frederick Powys Sketchley, R.M.L.I., Royal Naval Division. For services in the Gallipoli Peninsula. On the 13th July, during operations south of Achi Baba, a retreat began and rapidly developed, which might have had very serious consequences. Major Sketchley, who was with the supports, assisted by Lance-Corporal J. G. Way, prevented some of these men from retiring. further. He then gathered together about 40 of them, reorganised them, and leading them forward, reoccupied some of the trenches. Major Sketchley and Lance-Corporal Way returned twice to gather more men, and, collecting in all about 100, retook further trenches, captured some 40 prisoners and secured the position. Both of them exhibited great courage, presence of mind and powers of personal leadership in a moment of crisis.

Lieutenant Mark Singleton, R.N. For his services during the advance from Qurnah and capture of Amara at the beginning of'June, 1915. Lieutenant Singleton was in command of the armed launch "Shaitan," and displayed great skill and energy in pursuit of the enemy gunboat "Marmariss" and other craft. He went ahead of the main force through Amara in a gallant manner and performed the remarkable feat in his small armed tug of bringing to surrender a body of about 11 officers and 250 men of the Turkish troops whom he had intercepted, and causing a large number to retire, thus largely contributing to the surrender of the town.

Squadron-Commander Arthur Wellesley Bigsworth, R.N. For his services in destroying singlehanded a German submarine on the morning of August 26th, 1915, by bombs dropped from an aeroplane. Squadron-Commander Bigsworth was under heavy fire from the shore batteries and from the submarine whilst manoeuvring for position. Nevertheless, displaying great coolness, he descended to 500 feet, and after several attempts was able to get a good line for dropping the bombs with full effect.

Surgeon Basil Alfred Playne, R.N., Royal Naval Division. For gallantry and good service during operations near Gaba Tepe from April 28th to May 1st, 1915. On several occasions he rushed across the open (the communication trench being incomplete) into the fire trenches and attended the seriously wounded, regardless of the severity of the enemy's fire; on one occasion he carried a wounded officer on his back from the fire trench to the communication trench under heavy fire. His comspicuous bravery not only inspired the stretcher bearers to perform fine work, but gave confidence and spirit to all ranks. He was again several times brought to notice for gallant deeds when attending wounded on May 3rd and 4th.

The KING has further been graciously pleased to give orders for the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to the following Officers:

Lieutenant Colin Cantlie, R.N.

Lieutenant Irving Montgomery Palmer, R.N. For his services in command of H.M.S. “Comet'' during the advance on Amara, where he was landed with a very small force to preserve order, and at the barracks, though accompanied by only two men, he received the surrender of a battalion of Turkish officers and men.

Sub-Lieutenant Reginald Horace Lilley, R.N. For his services in charge of a 4.7" gun in a horseboat, and for the excellent manner in which he performed the difficult and dangerous task of securing a small steam tug, which had been left at Amara by the enemy with steam up, with a large lighter alongside her, and shipping in the lighter about 80 officers and 800 men who had been taken prisoners. Many of these had to be disarmed, and Sub-Lieutenant Lilley had only two men to assist him in the task.

Acting Lieutenant Alan Bennis Fennel Alcock, R.M.L.I., Portsmouth Battalion. For gallantry and good service near Gaba Tepe, between the 28th April and 1st May, 1915. Accompanied by Lieutenant Empson, of the same regiment, with two platoons, numbering in all 60 men, he defended an isolated trench against overwhelming odds. Lieutenant Empson was wounded early in the day on April 30th, and was killed on May 1st, and Lieutenant Alcock was finally compelled to withdraw, after having held this ground for four nights and three days. During this time no food or water could be conveyed to the trench, and at one time ammunition was reduced to about 15 rounds per man.

Lieutenant George Swinney, R.N.R.

Lieutenant John Thomas Randell, R.N.R.

Lieutenant Thomas Edward Price, R.N.R.

Lieutenant Francis William Lyte, R.N.R. For his services as pilot of the armed launch "Shushan," on the 9th May, 1915, when he handled the vessel with the utmost coolness under fire. Lieutenant Lyte has done good work in the Shatt-el-Arab operations on many other occasions.

Sub-Lieutenant Charles James Gibbon, R.N.R.

Sub-Lieutenant Charles Henry Hudson, R.N.R.

Acting Sub-Lieutenant Irvine Muirhead Twyman, R.N.R.

For his services in the submarine commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Cochrane in the Sea of Marmora.

Sub-Lieutenant Frederick Parslow, R.N.R. For his services in the horse-transport "Anglo-Californian," which was attacked by a German submarine on the 4th July, and subjected to heavy gun-fire for an hour and a half. Sub-Lieutenant Parslow steered the ship throughout the action, and maintained his post after his father, the Captain of the ship, had been killed by a shell, until some of our patrol boats arrived and drove the submarine off.

Engineer James Crawford, R.N.R. For his services as Chief Engineer of the same transport, in the escape of which he was largely instrumental by maintaining the vessel's maximum speed in spite of a shortage of firemen.

Skipper Jesse Jones, R.N.R.

Skipper Albert Edward Sayers, R.N.R.

Monsieur le Lieutenant de vaisseau Henri Julien Paul de 1'Escaille, de la Marine francaise. For his services in command of the French Seaplane Squadron in Egypt. During the earlier part of this year, when hostile patrols were in touch with the Allied forces holding the Suez Canal, Lieutenant de vaisseau de 1'Escaille, as pilot, made some brilliant and daring reconnaissances over long stretches of the Sinai Peninsula, where engine failure meant certain destruction to plane and to pilot. On these occasions, although under fire, by his skill and courage, he never failed to secure valuable information as to the enemy's movements.

Monsieur le Lieutenant de vaisseau Alfred Louis Marie Cintré, de la Marine francaise. For his services as a seaplane pilot in Egypt. He displayed great skill and intrepidity in a reconnaissance over Bir Saba on the 11th April, 1915, when his plane was subjected to a heavy shrapnel and musketry fire, and was hit in more than one place. With consummate coolness Lieutenant de vaisseau Cintré circled over Bir Saba again and again, until the number and position of the enemy were observed. He then turned his plane towards the ship, and, though the engine was damaged, succeeded by very skilful handling in traversing the distance of thirty-five miles to the coast-line in safety.

Leading Seaman Coxon, with great presence of mind, grasped the situation, rallied his Company, and led them on to the enemy's trenches; a retirement might have had serious results. By his personality and example he saved the situation.

Leading Seaman J. Borrowman, O.N. C/5/2407, Anson Battalion. For conspicuous gallantry on 4th June during operations at Cape Helles. During an assault a number of men had become separated from their units; Leading Seaman Borrowman gathered them together, reorganised them, and led them again to the assault, showing remarkable powers of leadership and command of men. He set a splendid example.

He was heavily fired on from several places, and, in spite of trouble with his engine, which commenced before he reached the bridge, he returned safely to his base after a night flight which had lasted over four hours.

DESTRUCTION OF GERMAN CRUISER “KÖNIGSBERG”

NAVAL DESPATCH dated 15 July 1915

Admiralty, 8th December, 1915.

His Majesty The KING (is) pleased to give orders for the appointment of the following Officers to the Distinguished Service Order, in recognition of their services, as mentioned, on the occasion of the operations against the "Konigsberg" (see Destruction of German Cruiser "Königsberg", Naval Despatch dated 15 July 1915):

Captain Eric John Arthur Fullerton, R.N. Was in charge of the two Monitors, and conducted the operations in the river with complete success.

Commander Robert Amcotts Wilson, R.N. These two Officers had to deal with a very difficult task, entering a river of which very imperfect information was obtainable, against an unknown and invisible defence, which might well have been very serious, and there is no doubt that the Monitors were most fortunate in not being more severely handled by the enemy.

Squadron Commander Robert Gordon, R.N.A.S. (Captain, temporary Major, R.M.). Was in command of the Air Squadron. Was indefatigable in his work, and ran great risks in spotting and reconnoitring.

Flight Commander John Tulloch Cull, R.N.A.S. (Lieutenant, R.N.).

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Harwood James Arnold, R.N.A.S.

Flight Commander Cull and Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arnold were spotting on the 11th July, under fire, in a Biplane, when the enemy's fire damaged it so that it descended in a quarter of an hour from 3,200 feet to 2,000 feet. During this time no attempt was made to return to Headquarters at Mafia, although it was obvious that this could not be done unless a start was made at once. Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arnold continued to send his spotting signals the whole time, and when a quarter of an hour later the machine was again hit and forced to descend, Flight Commander Cull controlled the machine and Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arnold continued to send spotting corrections to the last, after warning the Monitors that they were coming down, and would endeavour to land near them.  The aeroplane finally came down in the river, turning over and over. Flight Commander Cull was nearly drowned, but was assisted by Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arnold, and both were rescued by a boat from the "Mersey."

The KING (is) pleased to approve of the grant of the Victoria Cross to Squadron-Commander Richard Bell Davies, D.S.O., R.N., and of the Distinguished Service Cross to Flight Sub-Lieutenant Gilbert Formby Smylie, R.N., in recognition of their behaviour in the following circumstances:

On the 19th November these two officers carried out an air attack on Ferrijik Junction. Flight Sub-Lieutenant Smylie's machine was received by very heavy fire and brought down. The pilot planed down over the station, releasing all his bombs except one, which failed to drop, simultaneously at the station from a very low altitude. Thence he continued his descent into the marsh. On alighting he saw the one unexploded bomb, and set fire to his machine, knowing that the bomb would ensure its destruction. He then proceeded towards Turkish territory.

At this moment he perceived Squadron-Commander Davies descending, and fearing that he would come down near the burning machine and thus risk destruction from the bomb, Flight Sub-Lieutenant Smylie ran back and from a short distance exploded the bomb by means of a pistol bullet. Squadron-Commander Davies descended at a safe distance from the burning machine, took up Sub-Lieutenant Smylie, in spite of the near approach of a party of the enemy, and returned to the aerodrome, a feat of airmanship that can seldom have been equalled for skill and gallantry.
