Introduction
A list of Royal
Navy captains of major warships ranging from ironclads in 1861
to destroyers in 2011 has been compiled by Mr Colin Mackie
of www.gulabin.com.
The complete list, updated in December 2014 can be found at his
site as a PDF.
My own investigation of the British Admiralty and Admirals was not intended to to go down as far as commanding captains, but as many of these men went on to serve as Admirals during the war, I thought these lists would add interest. I am therefore very grateful for the work of Mr Mackie and his agreement for me to use the World War 1 data. Most major warships are here - dreadnought battleships, pre-dreadnoughts, cruisers, light cruisers, and aircraft carriers, also some monitors and armed merchant cruisers Captains of World War 1 warships are listed below in two columns - by ship and by captain - from the outbreak of war into the early post-war years. The promotion of some captains makes interesting reading. Note: Dates can vary from other
sources. They may refer to the date the appointment is made or
taken up - sometimes a matter of months. The same applies to
relinquishing command.
For
additional information on both Captains and Ships, the Dreadnought
Project has a wealth of data.
Where some of this data has already been added it is identified by (dp) |
The
first date in brackets after the ship's name is the year she was
commissioned. The second is when she was placed in final
reserve, decommissioned, converted, sold for scrap or lost. If
the captain was killed, his name is marked with +
