Armed Trawler
(not to be confused with destroyer HMAS Parramatta)

 

One of hundreds of fishing vessels taken into naval service in World War 1, trawler, built 1891, 168grt, Hull-registered H.445, taken into naval service December 1914 as minesweeper, armed with 1-6pdr, returned to civilian service September 1915. (British Warships 1914-1919)

During passage from Smiths Knoll to Cross Sand vessel rolled dangerously and shipped huge quantities of water fore and aft

3.00 pm Entered Yarmouth Haven

This day Jay warned numerous trawlers that they were fishing in prohibited areas

3.45 pm In position 3.5 miles W of North Middle buoy turned round and set course W0.75S for Haisbro assuming that Makado had missed me on his passage to Smiths Knoll.

5.00 pm Off Haisbro LV

5.30 pm Met Jay and as he was short of fresh water advised him to return to port

Jay cruising NW of Haisbro LV

6.00 pm Proceeded to LV and asked him please telephone SNO Cliff Hotel Yarmouth that I have met trawler Jay and finding him short of water advised him to return to port

9:15 am Tried firing blanks for practice at floating targets but gun missing fire three times, closed her up and left her for three quarters of an hour

10:00 am On opening breach and examining gun found that striker was broken

10:15 am Sighted Smew and Willet

Signalled Smew and asked if he had a spare striker ... his reply being in the affirmative I put out our boat and sent PO on board for it

11:00 am Boat returned and taken on board

Set course NNE for Jim Howe Bank

12.20 pm Jim Howe buoy abeam

Sighted patrol vessel Rosher and drifter Ocean Foam

2.00 pm Middle buoy abeam

3.45 pm Met Miura who informed me that we had to cruise in company and look for Grecian and Makado in Lat 53 30N Long 2 00E

4.50 pm Altered course S0.5W to return to Haisbro on account of it getting thick with rain making it impossible to find position of other vessels

6.10 pm Off Haisbro LV, again sighted Smew

4.15 am Met Smew getting underway also  ...  signalled that he wished to speak to me

4.45 am Smew came alongside and informed me that he had received a wireless message ordering all vessels of the Auxiliary Patrol based at Yarmouth to return to port at once, and Smew sent me to inform Miura to that effect while he proceeded to Smiths Knoll to bring Willet to port, expecting to arrive about 1 pm

8.20 am Off Yarmouth Haven

9.15 am Received supplementary sailing orders to proceed to Smiths Knoll and patrol Area Q and send Makado, Smew, Willet and Grecian into port

Received message: Parramatta and Grecian, look out for enemy submarine 10 miles east of Jim Howe buoy tomorrow morning

Signalled Grecian: I am going to dodge here until 2.00 am tomorrow morning then we will proceed full speed to position 10 miles east of Jim Howe buoy

4.45 am Patrol drifter Bullrush came alongside and reported that fish carrier named Eastwood of Hull spoke to him during the night at approx 2.00 am and reported seeing two Zeppelins in Lat 54 37N Long 2 22E at noon on 14th yesterday

5.00 am Grecian proceeded to Yarmouth to report Zeppelin sighting

6.10 am North Middle buoy abeam

6.45 am In sight of Jim Howe buoy

8.30 am 3rd Channel buoy abeam

9.45 am Cross Sand LV abeam

10.30 am South Scroby B abeam

10.50 am Entered Yarmouth Harbour
