[The sailing ship was the three-masted French vessel QUILLOTA. The Cabinet papers for 8 October 1917 state: 'The First Sea Lord reported that HMS Mantua had sunk an armed French sailing-ship by gunfire in the Bay of Biscay, mistaking her for a German raider. One Frenchman had been killed on the sailing-ship, and six of the crew of HMS Mantua had been wounded. Suitable apologies had been tendered to the French government, and the Admiral at Sierra Leone had been ordered to Dakar to confer with the French Naval Commander, with a view to investigating matters with the French.' (Papers held at the National Archives, ref CAB/23/4. The report of the subsequent Court of Enquiry is also held at the National Archives, ref ADM 116/1719, but is not available online.) There is an account in French of the incident from the viewpoint of the French ship at Pages 14-18 Forum ]

Had the KANGAROO not been in convoy it is reasonable to suppose that she would have been sunk.' The document is held at National Archives, catalogue reference CAB/24/31. In December 1917 the owners, master and crew of the POLITICIAN instituted legal action against the owners of the KANGAROO. In July 1918 the Court awarded £5000 to the plaintiffs in respect of the salvage services rendered by them to the KANGAROO. (Source: The National Archives catalogue reference HCA27/166)]
